6 Hours of Spa: Fernando Alonso to Start from Pole in WEC Debut

Fernando Alonso made his WEC qualifying debut on Friday in Spa-Francorchamps, the #8 LMP1 Toyota, which Fernando is part of qualified in 2nd place, but will lead the pack on Saturday, after the pole-sitting sister Toyota was excluded from qualifying.

Fernando was the first driver to set a lap time in the #8 Toyota, but it ended up being his only timed lap, as his second timed lap was compromised by a red flag, having to abroat it.

Alonso’s co-driver for this qualifying was Kazuki Nakajima, having set the faster lap of the two, avaraging a 1:54.962 lap time from the drivers’ best laps.

Originally after qualifying concluded, the #8 LMP1 Toyota’s lap time avarage was good enough for ‘only’ second place, but after the qualifying session concluded, it was found that the #7 Toyota was under breach of rules with incorrect declaration of the fuel flow.

The #7 Toyota which was found to have broken rules will now start the 6 Hours of Spa from the pit lane, meaning that the #8 car driven by Fernando Alonso, Kazuki Nakajima and Sebastien Buemi will start from pole position.
