Fernando Alonso will start his final Formula 1 Grand Prix from 15th place on the grid.

Qualifying 1

The Spaniard’s first flying lap was only good enough for 17th fastest, but in the closing stages, he pulled out the 14th quickest lap. Which was good enough for advancement into Q2.

“And Fernando we are through, we are through. That is P14. That my friend is magic, well done!” – Will Joseph to Fernando Alonso, after advancing to Q2.

McLaren team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne set only the 18th fastest time, which meant that Alonso swept the Belgian driver in their qualifying battle, a feat, that only Alonso managed this year.

Alonso will retire from Formula 1 with a 26 race streak, where he out-qualified his team-mate.
Qualifying 2

Alonso’s first flying lap of Q2 was 3.6s slower than Hamilton’s provisional pole lap time, putting him only 15th.

The Spaniard improved to 14th in the closing stages of Q2, but Sergio Perez, who was slightly quicker, dropped him back down to 15th.

Qualifying 3

Lewis Hamilton took yet another pole position, beating his team-mate Valtteri Bottas by 0.162s. Both Ferrari’s will line up behind the Mercedes’ on the grid, while both Red Bull’s will follow the red cars from Maranello.

Hear from Fernando, Post-Qualifying:

“It was quite difficult. We weren’t sure about the Q2 possibilities today, we’ve been quite slow in all the sessions in the weekend, so it was a nice moment to be in Q2 today.

“We are five positions away from points tomorrow, from P15 to P10, so let’s see, if we can have a go tomorrow!

“I will enjoy it.”
