Fernando Alonso will start the 2018 Hungarian Grand Prix from 11th place on the grid.
It was a rainy qualifying session in Budapest.
McLaren opted to start the first qualifying session on intermediate tyres with both cars, but as the track dried out, both cars quickly switched to the ultra soft tyres.
Stoffel Vandoorne managed only the 16th fastest lap time in Q1, meaning he would not advance to the next part of qualifying for the 5th time in a row.
Alonso out-qualified team-mate Vandoorne for the 17th time in a row, as he set the 9th fastest lap of Q1 in the difficult conditions, advancing to Q2.
Qualifying 2 was set to be a lottery. The session begun in dry conditions, but within one lap, everyone – including Fernando Alonso had to make a switch onto inters.
The Spaniard managed to set the 11th fastest time, but it was bad timing by McLaren, as the switch to inters came too late and the track conditions became worse, it was not possible to improve.
It was a switch onto full wets for Alonso later in the session in an attempt to improve lap time, but the improvement never came as the track conditions haven’t improved.
Q3 was a mess with the Toro Rosso’s qualifying as high as 6th, ultimately meaning, this was a thrown away opportunity for a good qualifying results for Fernando Alonso.
Fernando Alonso, Post-Qualifying:
“The conditions were very difficult today and in these situations you need to have a bit of luck and be on track at the right time.”
“We haven’t been very competitive this weekend and in Q1 we were already a bit concerned that we wouldn’t make it through to Q2. Thanks to the rain we managed to get to P11, which is a good place, close to the points zone. Starting positions here are quite important and we are probably further up than we thought we would be.”
“At the end of Q2 the heavy rain was affecting the last part of the track, so we decided to attempt another run on extreme Wet tyres, knowing that we would probably be slower, but we tried anyway.”
