The Toyota #8 Car driven by Kazuki Nakajima, Sebastian Buemi and Fernando Alonso is on provisional pole for the 24 Hours of Le Mans after the first qualifying session.
With the threat of rain on Thursday’s qualifying sessions looming, as well as good visibility and low track temperatures early in the two-hour session, the leading LMP1 contenders set their best lap times on their first flying laps.
Kazuki Nakajima set the best lap time for the #8 Toyota with a 3:17.270s leading Jose Maria Lopez in the #7 Toyota by just 0.107s.
Fernando Alonso & Sebastian Buemi also got to drive in the #8 car later in the session to complete their 5 mandatory laps, altough neither of them improved Nakajima’s first lap time.
SMP Racing car #17 in courtesy of Stephane Sarrazin was the closest private team non-hybrid car to the Toyota’s, trailing by 2.213s from the provisional pole time.
Fernando Alonso, Post Qualifying:
“It was a good day for us and we learned a lot in free practice with the set-up. In qualifying it was more about getting used to the conditions at night.”
“It went well for me and it was important to get some laps in the dark; I’m looking forward to more tomorrow as I am still finding some references and braking points.”
“This race is so long and difficult so anything can happen but we are as prepared as we can be and we have done a good job up to now.”
